Speaker: Ann Rockley, Charles Cooper and Eric Freese interviewed by Scott Abel
eBooks are a hot topic. And, there's reason to be excited. First, there's the overwhelming success of the Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad (and the tablet computing market it helped to spawn). But that's not all. According to online retailers like Amazon.com, sales of eBooks are outnumbering sales of paperback books. And according to Apple, apps for reading eBooks on smart phones like the Apple iPhone and Android powered-devices are downloaded more than any other type, further fueling the excitement. Meanwhile, some school districts are getting rid of old school textbooks altogether, replacing them with eBooks and equipping students with eReader devices. Libraries also have jumped on the eBook bandwagon, adding services like eBook and eReader lending -- some have even ditched paper books altogether, opting instead to offer a digital smorgasbord of eBook content to their patrons.
Join Scott Abel, The Content Wrangler, for an informative discussion with publishing experts Ann Rockley and Charles Cooper, authors of the soon-to-be-released, "eBooks 101: The Digital Content Strategy for Reaching Customers Anywhere, Anytime on Any Device", and publishing production guru, Eric Freese of digital publishing software and services provider, Aptara. The four will discuss the challenges impacting organizations as they make the move to eBook publishing including: standards, device types, eBook varieties, screen sizes, ensuring layout and design integrity, production processes, and more. Attendees will learn the key differences between eBooks, enhanced eBooks and apps, and they'll gain an understanding of the considerations publishers must make when creating publications for multiple device types like eReaders, smart phones and tablet computing devices. And, they'll come away with an understanding of the decisions they'll need to make when creating eBooks for the iPad, Kindle and other device types.

Developing a DITA-based content strategy for reuse
Thursday, January 27, 2011
Presented in conjunction with Data Conversion Laboratory .
You can listen to the webinar via this link. Please note that the recording includes both video and audio, so it's a large file.
Join Ann Rockley as she discusses DITA and topic based reuse.
Reuse is one of the key features of DITA and many companies have developed their business case for content management on the savings that they expect from reuse. However, few companies actually plan for reuse. Without planning, authors don't know what they could or should reuse. In addition, even if they knew where and what the content was, they couldn't reuse it because the content is not in a reusable state.
Companies that plan for reuse and create well structured and organized content, realize higher savings and greater control over their content.
Planned reuse requires a content strategy for reuse. This webinar provides guidelines for:
- Identifying requirements and opportunities for reuse
- Determining the best methods of supporting your reuse
- Develop a content strategy for reuse including:
- Methods for reuse
- Writing for reuse
- Governance for reuse

iBooks, enhanced eBooks, iPad apps... by now, most publishers understand that to effectively exploit new media capabilities, they've got to transition away from a print production paradigm.
